Business graduating senior Jonathan Van Zile will serve as student speaker. Sr. Jane Mary Sorosiak, OSF, and Owens-Illinois, Inc. Chief Executive Officer Albert Stroucken are this year’s Honorary Doctoral Degree recipients. Mr. Stroucken will also give the Commencement Address.
Sr. Jane Mary Sorosiak, OSF
Sister Jane Mary Sorosiak has been a member of the Sylvania Franciscan Community for over 50 years, entering from Toledo’s St. Hedwig Parish in 1956. She holds a bachelor’s degree in art education from the former Mary Manse College, and dual master’s degrees in art and English from Bowling Green State University.
Sr. Jane Mary taught art and English for 14 years at Cardinal Stritch High School and was one of four pioneering Sisters, when the school opened. After her tenure at Cardinal Stritch, she came to teach at what was then, Lourdes Junior College, where she taught courses in art history, drawing, calligraphy, painting, and sculpture. At Lourdes, Sister Jane Mary also established the Associate Degree in Art program, and helped it grow into the four-year baccalaureate program that it is today.
After retiring from her role as a professor, she now works full-time creating custom ceramic murals in Alverno Studio. Over the past 30 years, Sister Jane Mary has been revered for her mural work. Dozens of churches, schools, and other organizations have sought her creative gift, requesting murals of their own. Today, her work can be found throughout the United States in California, Kentucky, New York, Ohio, and Texas. Her latest outdoor mural for Lourdes University can be found on the south wall of the new Dining Hall, and is titled “Multiplication of the Loaves and Fish.”
Albert P. L. Stroucken
As Chairman and CEO since December 2006, Albert Stroucken has initiated and successfully led Owens-Illinois, Inc. (NYSE:OI) through dramatic change. Within the first two years of his tenure, the company shifted its emphasis from driving volumes to enhancing margins, focused solely on glass by divesting its remaining plastics operations and began restructuring its footprint to better leverage capital and enhance free cash flow.
O-I has significantly strengthened its financial stability as a result, increasing earnings and reducing debt. From this position of financial strength, Stroucken is working to create the structural and process change needed to reposition O-I – and glass packaging – as the preferred and most sustainable packaging choice.
Under his leadership, O-I has expanded its global market for glass through acquisitions in Brazil, China and Argentina, and through investments in R&D, marketing and innovation. Stroucken also has established aggressive sustainability targets to dramatically reduce O-I’s energy usage and emissions, while increasing use of recycled glass and creating an accident-free work environment.
Stroucken serves on the board of directors for Baxter International Inc., a global medical products and services company. He is also a passionate advocate for early childhood education and has a long-standing commitment to the United Way. Under his leadership, O-I employees were honored with the United Way of Greater Toledo’s Pinnacle Award in 2011 for their record-breaking fundraising and volunteer efforts.
